A modern take on a childhood classic – french fairy bread.
When people remember birthday parties from childhood, it was all about the spread of home made goodies. One of my favourites was definitely the fairy bread.
I recently described fairy bread to an American who hadn’t heard of it and telling her it was sliced white bread, with butter (but usually margarine – 5 Star or ETA) with sprinkled 100’s and 1000’s on top. Let’s just say that she wasn’t impressed and couldn’t believe that any child would find this tasty.
In fact, now that we’re in an age where white bread is considered bad for you, then spreading butter and coated sugar sprinkles on top, seems quite excessive. However, the combination of sweet and savoury and the soft white bread makes fairy bread quite delicious.
